I still know the 8-year-old girl
voice top quiet, head held down.
She's in my heart and in my head
gently walking along my side, holding my hand.
I try so hard
to be the person
I would have needed.
Someone
to read her mind
to ask the right questions
to stand up for her.
That someone never came.
I am becoming the person
that takes a closer look
protest another version of her.
A girl without water
becomes the rain.
Love doesn't always grow from what you were given -
sometimes its born out of what you lacked.
Not out of bitterness
but out of the refusal to let
another version of me
go through the same thing.
