On a farmer's land, his donkey fell
Deep down into an arid well
He cried out piteously and loud
Until it gathered there a crowd

The farmer came with shovels, ropes
His neighbors with their hands and hopes
They tried to pull the poor ass out
In vain - the depth had not allowed

What can they do? The farmer thought
Of this old ass counting for nought
"Let's shovel dirt down in the well
In this grave he shall ever dwell!"

The donkey felt, what they intend
Cried out in view of this torment
But load by load fell on his back
How could he flee this bad attack?

For hours shoveled all the men
The well was slowly filled again
They'd almost done their cruel job
What miracle there: the ass on top!

The animal was not so dense
Had found a way of good defense
Shaked of the mud, trampled it hard
Slowly ascended, yard by yard

At last he stepped over the edge of the well
And trotted away with nothing to tell
The people marvelled at that beastly ghost
If you wanna be free, you've to struggle the most
